"Whig history" is Herbert Butterfield's term for writing the past as if it was always heading towards the present, treating today's world as the point of everything that came before, and only picking out the events that led here as the ones worth telling.

All living humans know that this afterlife exists, know which model governs it, and know that severely negative karmic conduct guarantees it.

The "midnight library" refers to a personalized hypothetical library where an individual has access to millions of books, each representing how their life might have gone had they made a different decision at a certain point in their life. Each book is titled with the alternate decision that could have been made. Once a book is opened, the visitor is transported to an alternate reality where they are the exact same age they are now, and live in that world for a few hours before they are transported back to this world.
