The "midnight library" refers to a personalized hypothetical library where an individual has access to millions of books, each representing how their life might have gone had they made a different decision at a certain point in their life. Each book is titled with the alternate decision that could have been made. Once a book is opened, the visitor is transported to an alternate reality where they are the exact same age they are now, and live in that world for a few hours before they are transported back to this world. Only you can enter your own midnight library.

For this debate, individuals with severely negative karmic balance are guaranteed an afterlife of suffering, in one of two models:

Hell 1: a finite afterlife of traditional physical torture (mutilation, extreme temperatures, bodily pain).

Hell 2: an infinite afterlife of subtle psychological torture (a perpetual waiting room, unending dread, the cycle of renewed hope followed by disappointment).

All living humans know that this afterlife exists, know which model governs it, and know that severely negative karmic conduct guarantees it.
